Wired 3/11/99 was where I saw the beginning of the ridicule
of Gore for supposedly making an outrageous claim. Michael
Medved picked it up from there.
The Wired attack said that the ARPANET preceded Gore and
that was supposed to finish him off. But E-bay and all the rest
we use could no more have existed on ARPNET than Jonah
could have been swallowed by a guppy. Gore hadn't claimed
to have had anything to do with ARPANET. In order for us
to have all this, we had to have something far far beyond
ARPANET. It was Gore, like Gingrich said, who saw that and
worked at getting that done. My feeling is that envy motivated
Bush to keep the advantage that the Wired and Medved led
ridicule gave him. I sensed that Bush was always afraid of
Gore "coming out" at some point, especially after Newt's
comment in support of Gore. - Birch back to origin of misquote
