Wilde and Shelley?
Do you know of any writings comparing Picture of Dorian Gray
& Frankenstein? We received an inquiry about this, which said
that there have been films that worked Wilde into the Frankenstein
story. We, as well as our fellow reader, would be very grateful for
any information you might have regarding this. While we have not
heard anything regarding this connection, Donald Harman Akenson
compares the author of Ecclesiastes to Wilde in his excellent book,
Surpassing Wonder.

Halloween Wish
We recently received and e-mail asking if we could help find
a photo of Boris Karloff's face as he appeared in the Universal
Studio production of Frankenstein. The writer, who has been a
fan of Frankenstein since reading the novel at a very young age,
would like his next tattoo to be the Karloff Frankenstein monster
face, but has not yet found a photo suitable for the tracing
necessary for the creation of the tattoo. The covers of our Masterpiece
Library and The Library of Literature editions feature resemblances
of the Karloff monster, but we were certain that the tiny derivative
images on paperback books that, chances are, are years older than
the Frankenstein fan, wouldn't come close to meeting the need.
Ditto the postage stamps, which we bought as many of as we could
and use only for the most important letters. Anyway, we sent an e-mail
to a radio station that had recently interviewed a horror film authority,
who had spoken of having collected old posters advertising many films.
We haven't received a reply, as yet, to that inquiry. As we continue our
search, we thought of posting this, so that, if there is someone out there
who would be able to help with this, they might let us know.
The matter of copyright is something we must leave to our Frankenstein
fan, yet, recognizing as Mary Shelley's father did that the greatest
pleasure comes from bringing pleasure to others, we hope that this
will not present a barrier to the objective. If you can help our
Frankenstein fan in his search for the photo he needs, please e-mail
[Tom@hailMaryShelley.com]. We will take care to preserve your
anonymity, should you desire it.
What we are looking for is an image from 3 1/2 to 6 inches in height.
Think upper arm.
Visiting used book stores in search of the desired photo, we have
found a number of interesting books that include some photos of
Karloff as the monster. Nothing yet has met the criteria, but there are
many more such stores to visit and very often those working in such
establishments are quite interested in helping out.
