3500 calories need to be burned per week to lose a pound
At 75 calories per mile I need to walk 47 miles per week or 6.6 per day
it is 1.1 mile from California and Oregon to PCC
it is 1.6 mile from door to Blockbuster
March 13th walked to Charlestown from Alaska &
California twice.
It is .7 mile from home to Charlestown. It is .6 from
California & Alaska
to Charlestown. So 2.5 miles is 200 calories.
March 12th slower walk 3.2 miles 250 calories. We
have been
finding high fructose corn syrup in our foods. The shocker
(why
didn't it occur to me?) is the tonic, of which I sent
down the drain
5 or 6 liters. Bread too. I walked to PCC and found
three loaves to
try and found a scone mix as well.
March 11th (the anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein)
133 1/2 pounds 3.2 miles
estimated 250 calories Plus a second
walk to PCC 2.2 miles 170 calories. My raspberry
fig bars (so healthful
in ingredients) is 60 calories per serving. What
is a serving? One bar!
High Fructose Corn Syrup is found in blueberries and
berry mix,
as well as tonic and bread. Studies show pesticides
and reduced
nutritional value come with non organic foods.
March 10th 3.2 miles estimated 250 calories
March 9th 3.2 miles estimated 253 calories
Started new Pulmicort inhaler
March 8th 2.8 miles estimated 220 calories
at this recalculated rate, we can expect the loss of
1 pound in 16 walking days
March 6th 2.8 miles estimated 225 calories
March 5th
at 5:50 p.m. I started to PCC and arrived there at 6:04 did an about
face and
was back at California Oregon intersection at 6:18 listening
to Hedwig which
is probably better than the Le Tigre that I couldn't find.
This I calculate I walked at a rate of 4.7 miles an hour
(2.2 miles divided by 28 minutes = miles per minute [.07857] x 60 = miles per hour 4.7
This should mean a consumption rate of 90 at minimum and probably more like 94
93 into the 3500 37.6 miles per week
If I were to walk the route twice a day morning and evening
or on Tuesday not at all and
double Sundays, it seems possible I could get the calories
burned to make weight loss
possible. Next Saturday, March 11th, I will not
have had time to lose a pound, but by
Saturday the 18th I ought to be at 134 for certain and
Saturday April 1st 131. Great goal
May 13 125 pounds
February 27, '06 weight is still 135 pounds but it may have been
higher for a few days.
Used Hoodia for a couple of days and today had no cookies until after
dinner.
Have been peaking at 500 since 18th at least. I forget to record

dreamed that I have smoked a good deal during my break.

126/74 pulse 57 Taking peak flow reading prior to Pulmicort
doses, one
early morning and another after work, to make sure that the Pulmicort
will
reach the airways, seldom is any Combivent needed to open airwaves.
No
inhaler has been necessary during the day with a couple of exceptions
for
the period I've been on Pulmicort.
Started fish oil - tsp at dinner daily
November 18, '05
The benefit of the Pulmicort has been evident for several days.
I have used the
Combivent seldom, most days not at all. I check my peak flow
number before
inhaling the Pulmicort to make sure that it will get to the airways.
In the first
days it was necessary to take Combivent sometimes to open up the airways
for
the Pulmicort dose. Today my first peak flow try was 400 at 5:30AM.
And the
chart shows that the full effect of Pulmicort is not reach until two
weeks have
elapsed, another five or six days.

5 AM peak flow only 130, but after taking Combivent the number was
500. It takes
a week or two for the Pulmicort to be fully effective. Just did
search "mixing Pulmicort
and albuterol" and found that some advised not using them together
because the albuteral is
needed to open the airways. If they are taken at the same time (some
was with a nebulizer some
not advice, not separate delivery systems such as I am using), the
Pulmicort puff doesn't get into
the lungs as much as if it follows the opening provided by the albuterol
(Combivent). I should
have taken the Combivent first and then waited for the opening effect,
and then taken the Pulmicort.

Follow up with Dr. Bonsack. Starting Pulmicort one puff twice a day.
Also got a flue shot.
138.2 on the clinic scale with shoes and all. Bonsack said the

better than those Musto had taken last. 91 and 84 were two he
mention and that I saw
but I'm not sure what they mean. Percentage of normal, I recall.

Wednesday
October 5, '05 took the 12 hour Allegra for the first time since the
day of the attack.
Tuesday
Octorber 4, '05 Had some coughing a Mavis' but only for a half
hour or so. Took the
Prednisone an hour and a half earlier than Monday on account of having
overslept and
figuring I could use a boost. Tuesday morning is my day of the
week to begin with
housecleaning and then going to school mid day. With an office
and two homes to do
when running late, the Prednisone was a help. But it was the
last dose. Blew
300 first thing in the morning. 375 at bedtime.
Monday
October 3, '05 Jerry insists that I stay home. I have during
the night and into the day
continued to take the Combivent hourly. At 11:00 a.m. I blew
250. I select Dr. Ronald O.
Watson as PCP for second time on phone with menue and voice recognizing
computer
system. The Prednisone. Jerry says, is so speedy that a co-worker,
hearng from her doctor
that he would be treating her with it, ordered a truckload of dirt
and, during the Prednisone,
put in two raised beds.
Oct ober 2, '05 A mild cold first evident Saturday October 1 brings
on asthma over night
which does not respond well enough to the Combivent taken hourly.
That day, Saturday,
I had started 12 hour Allegra D but in the middle of the rather
sleepless night in which the
cold symptoms were more evident, I took a 24 hour Allegra D.
Sunday, I was becoming
anxious on account of the lack of response to the Combivent and the
awful shortness of
breath. If my condition got any worse, I would be in serious
trouble. While Jerry went to
the drug store for Air Born tablets, I took the peak flow test 5 times,
the best I blew was
120. Just before noon Jerry takes me to the Emergency Room at
Swedish. The triage guy
seems "family" and lets Jerry join me in a room where I get Albuterol
for ten or fifteen minutes.
Then Jerry follows us to the room that has opened up down the hall.
More nebulizer treatments
(two more) and iv of some steroid. Xray shows no pneumonia. I begin
to feel some improvement
in ability to breathe. Dr. Livingston says, before releasing
me about three hours after I was
arrived, that although he hears wheezing, he also hears more air outflow.
He prescribes Prednisone
Zithromax and a Combivent with a bong-like Optichamber delivery system.
Since the Combivent
costs $1.15 per dose without insurance and $.35 with, getting
the greater benefit through more
complete inhalation is certainly worth the cost of $19.17.

Allegra D may be the cause of the problem. Will have to see how
it goes the next day or

inhaler costs $ 101 with copay of $ 20. (100 doses of 2 puffs each)
Aetna doesn't have Dr. Bruce Bonsack as a primary care physician and
so wouldn't allow
me to choose him. I went to the clinic where I was assured that
Dr. Bonsack had the same
designation as Dr. Musto and that it was likely that Aetna had not
updated their information
as Dr. Bonsack had only been with Swedish Physician West Seattle for
a month. I called
Aetna again and, after explaining the situation, was told that Dr.
Bonsack was being recorded
as my physician and that a note to someone who reviews this stuff was
sent on.
The info on pseudoephedrine indicates hypertension can result.
Checked at 3:50 p.m. and
had reading of 131/74 pulse 70. But then this could also have
something to do with my having
so little sleep the night before.
Except for some coughing and clearing of throat this afternoon while
going to and from Costco,
I have felt free of the over-reactive respiratory attack that requires
use of Combivent or Albuterol.
Am determined to stay awake so as to be ready for sleep come 9 or 10
this eveining.
August 8, '05 Monday - August 14 Sunday
[week 89]
This was a big week. In addition to everything else, I stopped
shaving (except for neck)
August 6.
August 14 took Allegra D at six a.m. for the first time. The pharmacist
suggested that
morning would be a good time because the first 12 hours would be the
most effective
with the pseudoephedrine. weighed 129 on home scale.
did not take any puffs after about seven a.m. until after getting home
from seeing
The March of the Penguins about 4:30 p.m.
Dr. Musto left the clinic.

Saw new doctor ( Bruce Bonsack ) who prescribed combivent
and Allegra D . Have to wait til after two August 13 for
the Allegra because
Dr. Bonsack wants me to take the 24 hour rather than the 12 hour, which
the
pharmacy had on hand.
I was quite impressed with Dr. Bonsack who provided me with lots of
information
about how it is likely that my spells (the worst was yesterday) can
be triggered by
the postnasal drip, rather as I had thought. He also spoke of
the effect that smoking
can have on the reaction to irritants (tending to lessen the reaction).
Some time after
smoking cessation the body may begin to over react. Reactive
respiratory disease, he
said, should be called over-reactive respirtory disease.
When I asked about using albuterol more frequently than the 4 hours
instructed with
the prescription, he said that I could use it an hour after a dose.
Heart rate was the
effect to watch for, he said. Don't let your heart rate go above 120,
he warned.
Dr. Bonsack's approach to the problem is so right. No Pulmicort,
unless, after attempting
to control the likely trigger, it is necessary. He explained
how the Combivent could be used
in different ways and that we would start with the lowest use and then
there were two more
ways that were possible if necessary.
Dr. Bonsack understood well that I had not committed to smoke no more.
He also
thought it a good idea to have an X-ray done.

Your body's ability to mend is beauty to behold ..
Within ...
You can expect ...
20 minutes
... your blood pressure and pulse rate to return to
normal. The temperature of your hands and feet will
also have returned to normal.
8 hours
... your blood oxygen levels to have increased to
normal limits and carbon monoxide levels to have
dropped to normal.
24 hours
...your risk of sudden heart attack to have substantially
decreased.
48 hours
... nerve endings to start regrowing and your sense of
smell and taste to begin returning to normal.
72 hours
... your entire body to test 100% nicotine-free with over
90% of all nicotine metabolites to have now passed
through your urine. You can also expect the
symptoms of chemical withdrawal to have peaked in
intensity. Your bronchial tubes will begin relaxing and
thus make breathing easier, and your lung capacity will
also begin to increase.
10 days
to 2 weeks
... your body to have adjusted to the physical
functioning without nicotine and the 3,500 particles
and more than 500 gases present in each puff.

Desire for a cigarette is strong, undiminished in anyway. Yet, to
some degree, I am feeling used to not smoking when I want very
much to smoke. I start this smokeless blog, thinking of it as a memo
a la Rumsfeld's long hard slog. Yes, long hard smokeless slog
blog.
The nicotine reserves in me are down to what? I wonder.
So it is easy to figure the number of hours I've been smokeless, but
how much less smoke is that than would have been?

Pick up spicy dill sandwich sliced pickles, having the hunch that
such might substitute for the oral fix of a cigarette. See an
ad for nicotine lozenges and want some, but J points out that I
would be introducing the stuff to my system that it had been doing
without for several days. I see the point but want something that is
a good replacement for the smoke. Something better than the
popsicle or pickle.
J notices that I am using the keyboard while wearing rubber gloves.
Yes, confusion of this sort happens when suffering smokeless distraction.
I do try not to say too much about what I am going through, but our
talk does help some. It would be more difficult, we think, if we were
both undergoing withdrawal. I make clear that I do not think of myself
as having quit. Rather, I am not smoking for the reasons to which the
readings
and inhalers testify.

remind me of why I don't have a smoke when I want one. The inhalers,
of course, do that too. Dinner, which turned out quite well considering
how distressed I felt smokeless, was satisfying. Following dinner with
episodes of the Sopranos made for a pleasant evening.
November 26, '03 Wednesday (2)
Having remembered that P had said that G had had respiratory problems
on account of a down comforter, I took our down 2 and synthetic 2 to
the
large machines at the Admiral Coin Laundry. While there I called to
explain
we will be absent from Thanksgiving dinner (JP's) and to get info on
taking
the Pulmicort and the Albuterol. Nurse says the latter taken shortly
before
the former should help the former to work effectively. Did not tell
her what
I blown.
Plenty lightheaded. Feeling well enough to want to smoke. The man half
of
the crew spiffing the Admiral Coin Laundry takes a smoke break. The
60
reading on the Omron, more than anything else helps me to get past
the
moments of inclination towards lighting up.
While waiting for the 4th machine to finish its rinse and extraction
cycles,
a fiftyish well-dressed woman with a younger companion addresses me
with a tone that suggested I'd been happily recognized by someone who
had not seen me for some time or had not expected to see me at the
Admiral Coin Laundry Wednesday morning. But, in a heartbeat,
I see
that the two are Jehovah Witnesses. What a relief. There are two articles
that are thought to be of importance in the issues of the WatchTower
I
am being given. One points out how untrustworthy people we depend
upon all too often are. The other has to do with our reliance on oil.
A verse from Jeremiah was offered ... pointing the importance of paying
attention, which I took as an invitation to elaborate on the theme.
Did well, in that I made my point, without getting carried away, not
that my point was welcomed. The point was that people tend not to pay
attention, when they think that others have or are taking care of this
or that
particular. My example John's problem with angel worship in 19 and
22 of Rev.
My point - no church has expressed any interest in the problem or its
solution.
And it is important to pay attention to this, as I point out, referencing
the Lord's
Prayer. Hey, it has been 2,000 years. The younger woman seems to know
the
historian I reference but whose name I can't think of at the moment
(Tertullian).
When the comforters are dry, I go home, have soup and blow 375.
November 25, '03 Tuesday (the first entirely smokeless day)
Begin use of Pulmicort and Peak Flow Meter late afternoon/
early evening. I blow 60. J, thinking the thing isn't working, tries
it and blows 450 or 500 several times, after which, I blow another
set of 60's. With the prescribed budesonide and meter comes an
appointment for Dec. 9, 8 a.m.
November 24, '03 Monday
Took two tablespoons of Tussin DM instead of two teaspoons between
4 & 4:30 a.m. which I did not realize until about 8:30 a.m. when
I took
two teaspoons more. Had picked up masks to protect friends from germs
when I coughed, and was wearing one when I unloaded from truck
to M's porch. The mask seemed suddenly a problem, as did the Tussin
DM.
I could not seem to get enough air. M said I looked terrible.
Sat at warm window at M's for about an hour, had green tea, and
feeling well enough, drove home after having canceled the day.
Got an appointment to see Dr. Musto at 3 p.m.
Begin use of Albuterol - two puffs every four hours (we take this to
mean four times daily). The pharmacist instructs holding the aerosol
four fingers away from the open mouth, unlike the instructions on
the box. Why is this?
